Longtime friends Kevin Bartol and Brock Wagner had always loved their hometown of Houston but were dismayed that the sizable city had no breweries of its own. In 1994, the pair opened the Saint Arnold’s Brewery in downtown Houston to craft local beers “with soul.”
The intimate brewery’s five year-round beers are only overshadowed by their 5 seasonal selections. While you can’t go wrong with any of Saint Arnold’s brews, Houston locals swear by the Fancy Lawnmower. This sweet and refreshing beer is a perfect antidote to the Texas heat. The citrus flavors are perfectly balanced by the use of Klsch yeast, which gives the ale a clean taste. Pair this brew with a summer meal of grilled fish and veggies for a delightful treat.
Saint Arnold’s first lager, Summer Pils, is another one of Houston’s best local beers. Like the Fancy Lawnmower, Summer Pils is refreshing and crisp, but with a nutty, slightly spicy taste. Taking the 2009 Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival, this brew’s delicate flavor has become a seasonal favorite for locals. Summer Pils complements spicy dishes and kebabs well and is bottled with a festive tie-dyed label. Enjoy it while it lasts, as Summer Pils only makes an appearance on the shelves of Saint Arnold’s for a few months a year!
